Spotlight Sports Group’s Cian Nugent, of Racing Post, has been named the new Chair of the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC).

Replacing Clive Hawkswood, who has served in the role since the organization’s 2019 inception, Nugent assumes the position.

“It’s a privilege to represent our sector during a period of substantial transformation in the regulation and public perception of betting and gaming,” remarked Nugent.

“Our primary focus will be advocating for responsible gambling practices, engaging in productive discussions with regulators, and educating the public.”

“The BGC plays a critical role in ensuring that consumers can partake in betting and gaming within a secure and responsible setting – we aim to see these endeavors mirrored in any forthcoming industry regulations.”

Hawkswood, a prominent voice in calling for an examination of the UK’s Gambling Act (a stance firmly backed by the BGC), had previously communicated his decision to depart from the role to the Board.

“Last fall, I informed the RAiG Board of my plan to relinquish my position as Chair,” he stated. “Considering my other obligations, I recognized that I wouldn’t have the necessary time to dedicate to the role once the Government’s Gambling Review commences fully.”

“We’ve utilized the interim to conduct a thorough search for my successor and to initiate the process of outlining RAiG’s agenda for the next year, taking into account the impending Review. I want to express my gratitude to everyone at RAiG for the incredible support and assistance they’ve provided since its establishment.”
