Premier League Resumes This Weekend With Seven Games
The English top-flight league has announced that seven out of the ten games planned for this coming weekend will proceed as expected, in the wake of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The previous round of games was called off.
The Premier League will recommence on the weekend of September 17-18, with two games also taking place on September 16.
Aston Villa will host Southampton on September 16, while Nottingham Forest will face Fulham on the same date.
On September 17, Wolves will take on Manchester City, Newcastle United will welcome Bournemouth, and Tottenham Hotspur will play Leicester City at their own ground. However, the game between Brighton and Crystal Palace will not go ahead, having been postponed due to planned rail strikes in the UK (which have now been canceled).
Brentford will host Arsenal on September 18 at noon, while Everton will face West Ham United later that afternoon.
As a result of the monarch’s interment, the Chelsea versus Liverpool and Manchester United versus Leeds United contests will be rescheduled and held at a later time.
The Premier League stated that following extensive discussions with teams, law enforcement, local safety advisory groups, and other pertinent organizations, there was no other option but to postpone these three contests.
The Premier League expresses gratitude to the UK Football Policing Unit and other police forces nationwide, as well as our broadcasting partners, for their assistance throughout this process and will continue to collaborate with them.
Premier League venues will pay homage to the Queen during matches played during the national period of mourning.
The Premier League will disclose new dates for the postponed matches in due time.
Previously, the English Football League also revealed that it would resume its match schedule commencing today (September 13), while football in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will also resume.
Horse racing in the UK has also resumed, but the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) indicated that no races will be conducted on the day of the actual funeral.
